Your Guide to NBN Business Connections

As the NBN expands across the country with plans for completion this year, so TeleChoice NBN services are expanding too. Businesses have a range of connection plans to choose from through TeleChoice and other providers that offer high-speed, reliable internet services your business needs to grow. Here is some insight from the TeleChoice broadband team.

NBN connection

NBN Business Connections

There are several different types of access technology that you can use to receive your NBN services, including:
  • Fiber to the Premises (FTTP): This is considered to be the highest-quality connection option because it provides stability and consistency to your internet connection, due to the fiber optic cable running directly to your premises.
  • Fiber to the Building (FTTB): This is a common option in multistorey office buildings. The fiber optic cable will go directly to a secure cabinet on the property and the NBN connection is delivered through existing infrastructure.
  • Fiber to the Node (FTTN): In this connection option, copper cables from existing landlines are used to provide the last few meters of infrastructure in order to deliver your internet. These may be replaced in the future with fiber optic cable.
  • Fiber to the Curb (FTTC): Here, the fiber runs to the curb outside your building to a distribution unit (node) attached to existing copper infrastructure.
  • Fixed Wireless: This utilizes the existing 3G, 4G or incoming 5G network to deliver high-speed internet from a transmission tower to an NBN outdoor antennae.
  • Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC): This is a much more rare option where old technology like an existing Foxtel connection is used to allow the fiber to reach the premises. It’s the oldest technology and therefore the one most likely to affect speeds and connectivity.
  • Skymaster satellite connection: This is most common in rural areas where access to infrastructure is limited, allowing widespread properties to access fiber internet via satellite links.
The type of access your business will have is dependent on the area you are in, as each technology is selected according to what would work best and be the most cost-effective for that location.

Wholesale Traffic Classes

You will require an internet service provider (ISP) to connect you with a package that allows you access to the NBN, like TeleChoice NBN. This allows businesses the ability to choose an option best suited to their needs and budget. The infrastructure of the NBN consists of three wholesale traffic classes that are supplied to the ISPs. This includes:
  • Traffic Class 1 (TC1): For voice services (VOIP) to replace landlines.
  • Traffic Class 2 (TC2): For symmetrical wholesale download and upload speeds, along with a committed information rate to help ISPs support business data services.
  • Traffic Class 4 (TC4): Is a network-dependent wholesale service for basic service providers.
TeleChoice NBN packages and TeleChoice broadband services are based on these traffic classes, allowing you access to business-appropriate, high-speed internet services.
