Simple Steps to Setup A Guest Wi-Fi Network
Why You Might Want A Guest Network
A TeleChoice Telstra connection means super-fast, super-reliable internet speeds so it’s easy to understand why you may want to share it with others. Still, giving out your password and router credentials to other is not always a great idea.
Of course, sharing it between family and friends shouldn’t be a problem but if you run an Air BNB, for instance, you won’t want to give that information out to strangers.
Equally so for businesses, restaurants and coffee shops, it’s far more beneficial to set-up a guest Wi-Fi connection which clients can easily access without giving them untethered access to your network.
How Does a Guest Network Work
Guest networks establish a separate access point from the same router, so you won’t need any extra equipment. This means, you can provide others with an internet connection without giving them access to your main network.
This means added privacy and security for you, as well as those using the guest connection.
Most business-level routers automatically have this feature built-in, but more and more smaller routers which would be used in homes do too. You should be able to find out your router’s capabilities in it’s manual.
How To Setup Your Guest Wi-Fi
Once you’ve ensured your router is fully capable of supporting a guest network, set-up should be fairly easy. Here’s how:
Step 1
Launch your web browser of choice and log-in to the router as the admin, usually done through your IP address. Enter the name and password for the admin account related to your router.
Step 2
Go into your Wireless setting, then search for a tab or button called ‘Guest Network’/ ‘Guest Access Points’/ ‘Guest Zone’. The name will depend on your router.
Step 3
It will likely be disabled by default, so be sure to enable this feature. Set the SSID name and ensure it’s not the same as your main Wi-Fi. Be sure to enable the SSID broadcast so that the guest network becomes visible.
Step 4
Now you can personalize the connection. Enabling a password access is optional if you want it. You can also control certain options like File Share etc. More so, you can limit the number of devices which can connect, not just their capabilities on the network.
Then, you should be good to go. If the above process doesn’t seem to work, be sure to check your router’s manual for more detailed instructions.
