TeleChoice Sydney, suppliers of flexible and affordable TeleChoice plans and TeleChoice products, supports the safe use of mobile devices while driving, to keep you, your passengers and pedestrians safe. Here’s some insight into NSW’s new tech to prevent mobile-phone related traffic incidents, and tips to help you stay safe on the road.

NSW Implementing a Mobile Phone Detection System

Due to government concerns about the increasing amount of road incidents as a result of mobile phone use, while driving, a new and innovative mobile phone detection system is being rolled out throughout NSW that will be expanded to other states if it works effectively. In this year alone, traffic officers have fined over 16,500 road users for illegal phone use.

The system includes placing 45 mobile phone detection cameras across the state by December. These units use two cameras to capture both vehicle license details and driver phone use. Using artificial intelligence, the system sets aside every recorded image where phone use is noted, which will then be confirmed independently. If positive for phone use, the driver faces a fine of up to AU$232 per violation.

Tips from TeleChoice Sydney: How to Use Your Mobile Phone Legally While Driving

TeleChoice plans and TeleChoice products utilize the Telstra network, giving you the best possible coverage in Australia, which is important if you are traveling for work, leisure or simply part of your daily routine. It’s essential for you to stay in touch wherever you are - but remember that direct phone use while driving is illegal in Australia. Here are some tips for using your mobile phone from TeleChoice Sydney safely on the road.
  • Ensure your phone is properly set up with your car’s Bluetooth, if available. This includes rental cars or if you are driving a friend’s car, as you can easily add multiple devices. If you have just started one of the new TeleChoice plans, test your device to ensure it is still synced with your vehicle.
  • Use a hands-free device. Hands-free TeleChoice products are available in-store, including in-car kits and other portable hands-free devices if you do not have Bluetooth in your vehicle. Be sure to set it up and test it out before you start your journey.
  • Plan your calls. Where possible, make your calls before you start driving or pull over to a safe area to stop and make a call. While calling on a hands-free device or over Bluetooth is legal, it’s best to have minimal distractions while driving.
  • Take the traffic and weather into account. Avoid calling or answering calls in busy traffic or bad weather, as driving in these conditions requires additional concentration and accidents are prone to occur. It also increases awareness of what other drivers are doing, so you can avoid accidents more effectively.
